John 1:45-49

I was reading through John 1 today, and ran across this passage:

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."
Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.

When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."

"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."

Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

This is an really cool passage. I heard one of my favorite preachers Erwin McManus preach on this recently, and he made a great point. In this passage, Nathanael had questions about Jesus, who he was, where he was from, whether or not he was God, but when Nate finally encountered Christ, all those questions didn't matter so much anymore.

So here is the question:
How are you helping people encounter Christ?
What are you doing to get them to a place where they can overcome their questions?
Are people encounter Christ through you or do they come away with more questions that get in the way?

  1. Wow....what an interesting way of looking at it. While reading God's word, I constantly come up with questions I would love to ask Him. I have always said that when I get to heaven I am going to get answers to all of these questions I have for Him, but will any of those questions really matter anymore? I seriously doubt it. I will just be in awe of Him. I'm sure all questions I did have will be completely erased from my memory once I meet Him. Awesome!!
